May, June, September, early October

Long daylight, warm but not punishing heat, and crowds well below the July–August peak. This stretch gets most of the benefits of summer without the worst of its queues.

July and August are the trade-off

Midsummer afternoons in Carcassonne often reach about 30°C, and the pale stone streets hold the heat. It's also the busiest stretch of the year, with the Festival de Carcassonne running through the summer — the château entrance is usually at its busiest around midday.

Winter is the quiet season

November to March sees a fraction of the summer crowds, with low light that suits photography and a real chance of snow on the Pyrenees in the distance. Days are shorter and the château closes earlier — the trade-off for having the ramparts largely to yourself.

The time of day matters more than the season

Whatever month you visit, the first hour after opening and the final stretch before the gates shut both run calmer than the midday crush, when day-trip coach groups cluster.
