The train is the simple answer
Carcassonne sits on the main line from Toulouse towards Narbonne and the Mediterranean, about 80 km from Toulouse, with direct services through the day and no need to change.
Driving the A61
Carcassonne has its own motorway exits, and the drive from Toulouse takes about an hour outside peak traffic. Paid car parks sit just outside the ramparts.
The walk from the station is longer than the map suggests
The station is on the northern edge of the lower town, by the Canal du Midi; the cité is on the other side of the Aude, about 2 km away and uphill at the end. The walk takes about 30 minutes via the Pont Vieux, which also gives the best first view of the walls, so it's worth building that climb into your schedule instead of picturing a quick dash from the platform.
Alternatives if you don't want to walk
Several city bus lines connect the station area with the cité, and from June to September a little tourist train shuttles between the lower town and the medieval city. A taxi is the other option for the short ride up.
